Chapter Nine

June closed the door, throwing the dead bolt once she was back from her easy late evening jog through Waikiki. She had scored several cartons of leftovers from the huge family meal Beth had made for them, and immediately stuffed a spring roll in her mouth.

“Have a nice run?” her mother asked. She was in the sitting room, one small light on, working a crossword puzzle.

“Yeah, fine,” she said back quickly. “You didn’t have to wait up for me, Mom. I’m a big girl.”

“I didn’t. I just got out from my shower.”

“Sure you did,” June whispered. She peeked in through her room door and saw Melanie sleeping quietly in the middle of the bed. “Mel okay?”

“Fine. She’s always fine. You worry too much.”

She poured two small glasses of guava juice. Handing one over to her mother with a couple of cubes of ice jingling in it, she sat in an easy chair.

“To worry is my job, isn’t it?”

“One of many. You’re quite good at it.”

June looked at her glass of juice, wishing it were a cocktail instead. She drank it down all at once. “I don’t think I’ve heard the list lately, Mom. Jot it down and give it to me in the morning. I’m going to bed.”

As soon as she woke at her usual early hour in the morning, June was up. No light came from the windows, and a glance at the bedside clock and she knew it would still be at least an hour before the sun started to rise. She washed her face and put on a moisturizer. Most of the pink sunburn from earlier in the week had turned dark already. Grabbing an elastic band from her cosmetics bag, she put her hair in a quick ponytail and turned out the light.

Tiptoeing through her room careful not to wake Melanie, she found a jogger bra and shorts in a drawer. Pushing the drawer closed again, she stood on one leg, then the other, to put on the shorts, then dragged the tight T-top over her head, adjusting the fit of it. Dressed, she went out to the sitting room and closed the bedroom door. Feeling around on the top of the small desk for her key card, a light at the other end of the room flipped on.

“Sneaking out in the middle of the night?” her dad asked.

“Just going for a run.”

“You’re on vacation. You’re allowed to sleep late.”

“I enjoy these early runs. Anyway, it gives me more time to be with you guys later.”

“You’ll be back for breakfast?”

“Find a good place nearby. I’ll be back in plenty of time. Figure out what you guys want to do today. We can go to the beach again, if Mel wants.”

“You’re still her mom?”

“Dad, stow it.”

“Just saying.”

“And I’m just saying you can go home any time. There are flights every day,” she said, glaring at him.

“What would I do on Maui by myself?” he asked.

“I meant back home to LA.”

As soon as the door was closed behind her, she began running.
